My early friends in the army, that socialised only with their friends of like rank invariably never got promoted and certainly did not make it to the top of the heap! So, the majority of them were enjoying more or less the same level of pay, while mine increased to roughly that of those I chose to hang with.
So, as my salary went up, did my friends change?
Yes. I began "mentoring" soldiers of subordinate rank that wanted to do better for themselves by learning from someone who had "made it" up the ladder.
And I managed to assist them change their incomes and lifestyles for the better.
Some earned a LOT more, some got paid a little more and some got paid less than I did... The critical thing to note is this:
